Why does the ball keep spinning?

The ball keeps spinning because of Torque.  There are essential two componants to torque: the Force you are applying and where you apply the force( the radius).  The equation for torque is   T= the radius multiplied by the force or T=rF.  In order to a get a larger torque all we have to do is increase the force that we are applying and increase the radius.
